You can even link up your GBA unit to fight against your friends or trade wrestlers you've created. p You can also play against the computer, which turns out to be a pretty good opponent. The game takes full advantage of both the A and B and the shoulder buttons, so the control is solid. Getting used to the time delay for punches and kicks can be frustrating, however. The manual does an excellent job in teaching you the tremendous variety of moves, and once you've learned what you can do, the gameplay is extremely satisfying. p About the only thing lacking from the game is familiar personalities. In offering so many fighters, each seems rather bland, and one is often a thin variation on the last. IHot Potato!/I is a bizarre little puzzle-shooting game that defies easy description. The plot concerns a group of Martians who've crashed on earth in their stolen minibus. Their cargo, a horde of multicolored anthropomorphic spuds, is on the lam. Their goal is to collect all the errant sentient potatoes infesting the streets, avoid getting their minibus splattered, and return to their spaceship. They collect their starchy charges by hurling other potatoes at them (naturally), which makes it play sort of like a vertical shooting game. p Hit potatoes of the same color and you remove them from the screen; hit them with other colors and it adds to the obstacles and confusion. The obvious goal is to stay alive by keeping the streets clear and getting to the end of the course. The puzzle goal, however, is to collect spuds. There are plenty of missions, and each one presents different goals, such as collecting potatoes of a specific color. You can also collect pills that let you unleash humorous powers on the starchy obstacles, such as pills that make them fat or sleepy. p The graphics are bland, but the spud animations are fun and amusing. And the action is frantic and keeps getting more devious. It plays like a shooter, mainly because most of what you're doing is shooting things, but the game grows as strategic as a puzzler like ITetris/I, with the color coding providing the puzzle aspects. The sound effects are good, but the music is great, invigorating, and well suited to your bizarre tasks. p Sadly, the game doesn't support the multiplayer link cable. Even if the core gameplay isn't for multiple players, some two- or four-player variant should have been included given the game's retail price. IIridion 3D/I is reminiscent of arcade shooters such as IGalaga/I or IGradius/I, except that IIridion/I is done in over-the-shoulder third-person 3-D. The problem is that this perspective really, really hurts the gameplay. One can only wonder how much better IIridion 3D/I might have been had the developers chosen a more workable point of view. p Your ship sometimes blocks your sightline as you shoot, and it's extremely difficult to accurately gauge distance and depth perception. Is that a small enemy that's close to my ship (maybe even about to collide with it), or is it a large one that's farther away? Are they shooting at me or are those "shots" actually distant ships? Are those enemies or part of the tunnel scenery? Another problem is the jerky control. If you're flying through a tunnel trying to kill the bad guys, you should be able to literally fly in circles. With the Game Boy Advance directional pad, squares are about all you can manage. p At least the game is extremely pretty to look at. IIridion 3D/I boasts one of the best graphics engines available for the Game Boy Advance, and considering the competition, that's no idle compliment. Progressing through the stages and worlds one is bombarded with beautiful scenery almost as much as enemy fire. p Yes, the game looks spectacular, and it will partially appease arcade shooter fans waiting for Game Boy Advance conversions of classics such as IR-Type/I and the aforementioned coin-ops.
